SOUND DESIGN FOR ACOUSTIC VEHICLE ALERTING SYSTEMS (SAVAS)

Electric vehicles are very quiet when driven at low speeds. Consequently, the EU Parliament has decided that, starting in 2019, all new electric vehicles will be equipped with an acoustic vehicle alerting system (AVAS).

The project Sound Design for Acoustic Vehicle Alerting Systems (SAVAS), led by RISE Interactive (formerly called Interactive Institute), examines how this impending legislation may affect people’s attitudes toward electric vehicles. Is there a risk that the new systems will become a barrier for a broad-scale introduction of electric vehicles? If so, what should be done to minimize negative effects and enhance people’s experience of electric vehicles?

In the project, a number of sound concepts will be designed that follow the forthcoming requirements. These concepts will be evaluated in laboratory facilities at Scania CV, and some concepts will also be assessed in actual traffic. Based on the results, recommendations will be presented for sound design and interventions.

The project is to a large extent funded by the Swedish energy agency (Energimyndigheten) and the collaboration partners are: Boverket, Transportstyrelsen, Scania CV, Volvo Cars Corporation, Volvo Buses, NEVS, Luleå University of Technology, Elektronmusikstudion EMS, and Pite Energi.
