Heat Sensitive Lamp
Capturing Energy as Form

In our everyday use of energy-intensive things, we don’t often stop to reflect on the acts and choices we make through our interaction with these things. For instance in purchasing a lamp, we might spend a considerable time considering lampshade designs but the choice of a light bulb is rarely reflected upon. In the ‘Heat-Sensitive Lamp’ example, the lamp takes its shape as the lamp is turned on for the first time, its material composition determined by the heat of light bulb. This example highlights electricity as an essential material in the design of a lamp – in fact, energy itself participates in the design of the aesthetic form of the object.
