The other day I got a letter from JOANNA. She sent a map that she and these other architects have been making of Ground 0. It's an amazing document, marking out where people can walk on the edges of, look in at, view from above... all these ways of WITNESSING - and honoring - the empty crater in the heart of the city. She's been telling me over the past months how her SENSE OF THE CITY has changed. Maybe because it's an architect, but I think everyone is HYPERSENSITIVE of the city landscape - both the physical places still covered with memorials and the horizon which doesn't feel the same, and the emotional levels of the people sharing the space with you. She says everything around her suddenly feels more important, the buildings, the views, the people, as if EVERYTHING HAS SOME STORY, SOMETHING TO SAY... some of them SOOTHE her but others make her UNEASY. She walks around, GAUGING HERSELF IN RELATION TO THE CITY, AS IF SHE WERE A KIND OF GEIGER COUNTER, measuring and experiencing the city
