| In developing experiential alongside
technical aspects of Sonic City, we considered complex factors in
the use experience, including heterogeneous and multiple use contexts,
extended use everyday and over time, and potential perceptions. We
employed design methods to involve both users and designers in the
human and cultural factors an initial wearable prototype was
developed as a platform for exploring new interactions integrated
into mobile behaviors and personal lifestyles. |

A jacket was designed to easily 'try
on' the experience of early versions of the technical system. Rather
than a design solution, the garment is a sort of working paper prototype
a participatory format for provoking discussion, improvisation
and iteration. The sensors were designed as 'plug-and-play' elements,
so that people could isolate and easily reconfigure their own interaction
and sonic variables. Electronic components were removable for easy
software calibration. As a platform for testing in the streets, the
wearable is a sort of Sonic City lab coat for a live urban 'wearability
lab'.

Initial tests were performed as experiments
in the city to explore the embodied experience. Balancing action and
reflection, we observed discovery and play with the variables of the
interaction. In discussions, were raised about the balance of personal
and public awareness, and new playful and expressive factors, providing
insights into both wearable and sonic development.

Taking reflection upon the wearable experience one step further, we
examined these emerging factors with fashion and textile designers.
In a workshop format, we explored the design implications and qualities
of social expression, mobility as a means of interaction, and emotional
and sensory aspects. As an experience prototype, the wearable design
enabled both active and reflective engagement with the use and lifestyle
factors involved in the design of Sonic City.
