IT + TEXTILES |
The book 'IT + Textiles' tells the story of a three-year design
research program led by the Interactive Institute and Newmad Technologies
in Sweden, where traditional textile design meets and, at least to some
extent, falls in love with computational technology.
'The Interactive Pillows' - a pair of pillows that transmit glowing
emotions to each other, no matter the distance, and 'Tic-Tac-Textiles'
- a pair of furniture that involves you in a subtle game with a mysterious,
unknown opponent are two of the results that have attracted lots of
attention on international exhibitions and conferences. In the book
we get to follow the researchers in their exploration of an emerging
design space. We get the opportunity to understand the ideas, theories
and methods behind these thought-provoking results and insight on what
happens when people from a variety of disciplines are joined together.
The IT + Textiles program mixed researchers from textile and interaction
design, textile and electrical engineering, philosophy and the behavioural
sciences to find new approaches to issues of use and context and form
and aesthetics, as well as reflecting on people's relations to everyday
objects and technology. The research documented in this book is not
about merely creating 'smart textiles' or exploring new technical possibilities,
but about how to re-think the use of textiles and computational technology
as design materials considering the different traditions, perspectives
and methods that are part of their creation. People, relations and the
everyday are always present in the research - not solely the object
- and that is what makes this program and this book one of a kind.

About the organisations leading the project
Interactive Institute
The Interactive Institute is an experimental IT research institute consisting
of multiple research studios spread throughout Sweden. The institute
acts as a meeting place - an interdisciplinary arena joining art, science,
industry and public life in research projects and strategic initiatives
to promote innovation, creativity and sustainable growth. The Interactive
Institute's studio in Göteborg investigates technology as design material
and the resulting implications for form and interaction.

Newmad Technologies
Newmad Technologies was founded as a spin-off from research groups based
at two of the leading research institutes in computing in Scandinavia,
the Viktoria Institute in Sweden and the Norwegian Computing Centre
in Norway. Today Newmad Technologies is a leading provider of systems
development competence within the areas of telematics, diagnostics and
systems for wireless solutions, with peak competencies in systems development,
programming and hardware integration.
