EPHEMERAL UBIQUITOUS COMPUTING
At PLAY Interactive Institute, we have employed Smart-Its in an exploration of ephemeral ubiquitous computing, by which we mean systems for creating temporary computational environments. Unlike systems based on more or less fixed installations and infrastructure, such systems should be easily deployed and configured by end users for temporary and ad-hoc purposes. We have developed two prototypes to explore this further:

SiSSy
SiSSy (Smart-its child Surveillance System) is a distributed and re-configurable system for parents to supervise their children and prevent accidents. The system is implemented with Smart-Its devices that are distributed as ‘beacons’ to define a perimeter of a play area and monitor local conditions. The system is easily configured on site by assigning which beacons emit danger, safety, or context dependent signals. The system detects and warns parents (through a wristwatch interface) about certain types of contexts, such as when a child moves out of a space designated as safe, or when loud traffic noise is detected nearby a child.

party
Textiles have the ability to easily change the mood and experience of an environment – in Party, textiles have been created integrating Smart-Its sensors and computation, along with conductive fibres and electro-luminescent wire woven into the texture and pattern of textures. Soft furnishing made of such context-aware and networked textiles can change appearance (for instance glowing or twinkling) in relation to local activities and time. In Party, we are investigating a dynamic aesthetic language for ubiquitous computing applications to suit – and even stimulate! – a party environment. Party is also a project in the IT&Textiles research theme.
