Special Issue on Distributed and Disappearing User Interfaces in Ubiquitous Computing in IJHCS
Peter Ljungstrand is guest editor together with Anind K. Dey (Intel Research, USA) and Albrecht Schmidt (Lancaster University, UK) for a special issue on distributed and disappearing user interfaces. The issue will address privacy, design, aesthetics and expressions, and the possible social impact of ubiquitous computing systems. An open call for papers has been announced for the issue with a deadline on the 31th of December 2001.

Lars Erik Holmquist returns to Viktoria
Lars Erik Holmquist, who founded the PLAY research group at the Viktoria Institute in 1998, has decided to leave his position at PLAY and the Interactive Institute. Instead, he will focus on starting a new research group at the Viktoria Institute. Lars Erik plans to keep in close contact with the remaining members of PLAY, and will still be located in the same office at Viktoriagatan 13.

SIGGRAPH 2001
28th International Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques, August 12-17, Los Angeles, USA

Two PLAY projects was showcased in the Emerging Technologies exhibition:

Pirates! is a mobile, multi-player, context-aware computer game, jointly developed by PLAY and Nokia Research Center in Tampere, Finland. Pirates! was a Chair's Prerogative selection for SIGGRAPH 2001.

Informative Art uses the language of traditional art, in particular non-figurative painting, to create dynamic information displays. The Informative Art piece De Stijlistic Dynamics was a Juried Selection for SIGGRAPH 2001.

Further, Lars Erik Holmquist spoke on a panel on mobile entertainment: :-o a Conversation About Interactive Entertainment Experiences on Instant Messaging Devices

Play also had a sketch presentation in the session displays by Lars Erik Holmquist and Linda Melin: Using Color-Changing Textiles as a Computer Graphics Display.

We also demonstrated the color-changing textile in the Creative Applications Lab.

New project with
Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship
Three students from Chalmers University of Technology will develop the commercial potential of PLAY:s work on user interfaces for small displays. The intention is to find a viable business model and form a new start-up company to commercialize the results.
Our previous project with Chalmers was very succesful and won several awards. It was based on research in the Hummingbird project, and resulted in the start-up company Wunderkind.
