EXPERIMENTAL SEMI-PUBLIC SPACES

download presentation (PDF)

Time's Up is a non-profit organization based in Linz, Austria. The group is working on the construction of experimental situations and builds large scale long term interactive situations, real-world environments that include interactive technology to build a world that is physically compelling, responsive and interpersonal. They also call them social and narrative Mixed Realities. The worlds have enough depth to encourage exploration, physicality to bind the visitors and scope to allow for a significant time spent within them.

"Contained"/"Shotgun TV"

The Time's Up Crew started their presentation with talking about their former artist collective "Contained". In 1994/95 they realized "Shotgun TV", a propaganda tool consisting of a pick up truck, a performer, three loudspeakers, a lightbeam and a video projector.

"Hyperfitness Studio"

In 1996, Time's Up was established and their first project, "Hyperfitness Studio" was started. The project's thematics are sport and fitness and the installation lets the visitors interact with absurd fitness devices.

"Spin"/"Sensory Circus"

"Spin - Spherical Interface" and "Sensory Circus" are installations to develop an adapted social environment. Time's Up always want to make the visitors discuss their experience, to deal with the relational "why" instead of the technical "how". "Reflective Lounge", for example, is a comfortable area within an environment for hanging out, where multiple screened images from within the installation are shown. On the one hand, this enhances the discourse among the visitiors, and on the other hand, it decreases the inhibition to re-enter the installation.
