Summary
Tactual Explorations is the title of a research-based inclusive public event that took place in Huddersfield – UK between 30 September and 7 October 2006; with workshops, talks and a tactile exhibition that interpreted one museum object. At this tactile exhibition, the selected object, the Bronze Bust of Sophocles from the British Museum's Greek and Roman Antiquities collection is represented tactually by ten commissioned artists, through one haptic simulation and 12 supporting artworks to enhance the physical information.
Tactual Explorations is formed as part of Isil Onol's current PhD research investigating the topic of haptic interactions with museum objects, that is being undertaken at the University of Huddersfield, under the supervision of Paul Atkinson from the University of Huddersfield, and Ann Marie Shillito from the Edinburgh College of Art.
Tech spec
A tactile interpretation consisting of a haptic simulation that is supported with tactile artworks created by commissioned artists.
Comments
The exhibition was a pilot study for potential future exhibitions that would interpret individual museum objects tactually.
Acknowledgement
The developers are grateful for haptic programming provided by Alastair Barrow of the Interactive Systems Research Group, University of Reading.
