Technology as Design Material
Alongside familiar materials that make up things, such as plastics, textiles, and wood, computation opens new possibilities for design. While artistic and technical practices have explored the properties of such materials over the centuries, we are only beginning to explore the potentials of new technologies for expression and form.
We investigate technology as a design material, integrated into everyday life and lifestyles. While the typical notion of 'form' is physical shape, computational materials put time, flow, energy, and other dynamic elements in focus. It is the reoccurring moments of interaction that establish new and sustainable roles for technological objects. We develop methodological foundations and practical examples in interaction design research, exposing the aesthetic and social implications of new technologies.
DESIGN GÖTEBORG has previously been called the RE:FORM studio, and started in 1998 in Gothenburg, Sweden, as the PLAY studio. In 2008, parts of the group started the Design Research Unit.
