DESIGN ACT is a cultural project highlighting design engaged with political and societal issues. It traces current and historical tendencies towards design as a ‘critical practice’ that engages ideologically and practically in these issues.
What are examples of these movements? Where does it take place and in what contexts? How does it happen and what does it take? DESIGN ACT aims at highlighting examples from practice and at
discussing these with practitioners, educators, curators, critics and
others in the fields of design and architecture – to create an international platform for discussion and exchange of knowledge and experience across many disciplines. The project operates through a process of growing an interest network, identifying and mapping examples, building a rhizomic online archive and staging a series of public events.
DESIGN ACT is initiated and produced by Iaspis, the Swedish Arts Grants Committee’s International Programme for Visual Arts, in collaboration with the Interactive Institute. Project managers: Magnus Ericson (Iaspis), Ramia Mazé (Interactive Institute). At the Interactive Institute, DESIGN ACT is part of the Forms of Sustainability project funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet).
