New Artists in Residence in sound art project

Visitors in the sound sculpture Spatial Silences, 2005.

Ann Rosén, artist, and Sten Olof Hellström, composer, are new Artists in Residence at the Art & Technology programme at the Interactive Institute from the beginning of May.

During their residency at the Interactive Institute they will work on a sound installation that will be created with a certain room as a starting point.

Ann Rosén and Sten-Olof Hellström has worked together since the end of the 80´s. They are established among the most important sound artists in Stockholm. Their work is interdisciplinary and crosses the border between art and science.
They have formerly worked in and initiated research projects at the Royal Institute of Technlogy in Stockholm. In the project Silent sound sculpture they researched the possibilities of eliminating one sound with another to create silence.
During their residency at the Interactive Institute they will work on a
sound installation that will be created with a certain room as a starting
point. The room and the technology they will use will create the frames and
the parameters for the final design. They will experiment with different
special speakers with different properties and designs and let the technology suggest
the idea they will finalise.
The visitor that enters the room with the installation will be able to interact with and control the sounds through different interfaces and sensors.
What do you expect to gain from your residency?
– I will get a chance to fill my gaps in speicific areas of konowledge that is hard to find elsewhere. And we get access to a bigger network, says Sten Olof Hellström.
Ann Rosén is looking forward to get inspired:
– It is an opportunity to give and to get inspiration that goes beyond the actual project. Sometimes the project can take a new direction.
