The Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC), planned to be the second Research Center, is being developed jointly by the Cyprus Institute and the Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France (C2RMF, headquartered at the Louvre). The Center will be devoted to the development, introduction and use of advanced scientific technologies in the domains of Archaeology and Cultural Heritage. The Mediterranean - Middle East region is one of the world’s richest areas in terms of cultural heritage and archaeological remnants and thus offers a fertile ground for developing this line of research.

The initial research activities currently envisioned for the STARC will be focused on three areas: the development and installation of advanced instrumentation that will contribute to dating and provenance studies of archaeological artefacts, the preservation and documentation of cultural heritage in digital format, and underwater exploration techniques relevant to the location and analysis of archaeological remains.

Land and facilities in the archaeologically rich Pafos area have been donated by the Municipalities of Pafos and Geroskipou to develop the ‘Pafos District Campus’ of the Institute, which will host STARC and other future activities, including Conferences and Summer Schools.
