Invitation
Dear Colleagues,
It’s our great pleasure to invite you to the 5th International Conference and Exhibition “Library consortia: technologies and innovation”. Specialists in library and information sciences, experienced in the development and use of library networking and interconnection technologies and representatives of booksellers and databases suppliers are the target population for this conference. The objectives The first results of the Association of Regional Library Consortia (ARLICON) transfer to new forms of cooperation will be discussed. The representatives of the Project Boards will focus on the project services and the prospects of improving these. Library specialists will share their experience in using new services, in transforming the library processes while cooperating with their partners. All these will help the libraries to find optimal ways for innovation and raising the effectiveness of their work. The establishment of partner beneficial relations between librarians, between libraries, between regions, between consortia is one of main tasks of the conference. The participation at the conference of the representatives of publishing houses, booksellers, computer companies will provide a global view of the modern information supply industry and will help in understanding the usage of these opportunities by the libraries. Foreign specialists are most welcome, since it widens the area of information exchange. The add-in program will take place in Finland, where the participants will be confronted with the experiences in information exchange and cooperation of the National Library of Finland and Finish academic and public libraries. The themes Special attention will be paid to the upgrading of information services – creation of union catalogues of periodicals, development of electronic ordering and document supply systems, use of copy cataloguing, development of common linguistics, creation of a distributed electronic library, creation of full text databases of articles with descriptors. We expect papers covering the wide range of issues in the areas of common library information environment development, including:
- models and standards for library consortia;
- models of library and partner organisation interaction;
- reorganization of library processes by use of consortia services;
- library performance evaluation;
- linguistics for the library and for the consortium;
- library systems as a part of the university management information system;
- electronic libraries and electronic collections for education, research and culture.
Submission and selection of papers
You only may send in original papers on the themes of the conference which have not yet been published or presented elsewhere. The Program Committee will make a selection and define the form of the presentations. The requirements for the papers are on the conference pages. The Program Committee will carry out a competition on the best paper. The authors of 5 selected papers will participate at the conference free of charge. The Venue The While Hall and the lecture halls of St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University will seat the participants during the main program (2nd July 2007 – 4th July, 2007). The libraries of Finland will the same during the add-in program (4th July 2007 – 7th July, 2007) The conference arrangements The main program, including the plenary sessions, seminars and master classes will take place in the Polytechnic University. The themes will cover the various aspects of library cooperation. Master classes will allow the participants to study the specific features of the services of:
- information and reference supply using the articles’ bibliographic database with abstracts and indexes for about 1500 Russian journals;
- copy cataloguing from ARLICON member catalogues and from other bibliographic databases;
- electronic document delivery service for journals’ articles;
- information retrieval in full text databases.
The add-in program will allow participants to visit the National Library of Finland in Helsinki and the Lappeenranta University of Technology Library and the Lappeenranta Public Library. Participants will also take part in seminars and discussions with leading Finnish library specialists.
The Exhibition
The exhibition of information services and products will be held in the Polytechnic University. Additional information for the exhibition participants can be found on the conference pages.
Booking and Registration
The registration form is available on the conference website. The invoice will be delivered after filling out the on-line forms. The booking of the rooms will be done after receiving the conference fee payment. The conference fee varies according to the chosen accommodation and activities. The conference fee covers conference arrangements, hotel, opening dinner and conference materials. ARLICON members get a discount of 10%. After 3rd of June the conference fee will be raised by 20%.
