AWARE is a design oriented research project that aims to increase people's awareness of how energy is being used in everyday life, especially in our home environment. The objectives are to develop strategies and artefacts that make people attentive of their energy use, as well as offer them control and possibilities of making their energy use more efficient.
The AWARE project runs during 2006-2008 and is led by the Interactive Institute POWER studio. The Interactive Institute is a Swedish applied IT-research institute focusing on design, art and technology, founded in 1998. The AWARE project is carried out in cooperation with Stiftelsen Svensk Industridesign (Swedish Industrial Design Foundation, SVID) and funded by Energimyndigheten (the Swedish Energy Agency, STEM).
The Power Studio works explicitly with sustainable development and well-being in the home from the perspective of the user.
The AWARE Puzzle Switch is an on/off button designed in order to encourage people to switch of their light, by playing with people’s built-in desire for order.
AWARE Chandelier is exhibited at Svensk Form, Skeppsholmen, Stockholm, as an example of products that use design as a tool for sustainable development. The exibition is part of Svensk Form's campaign Saving the Planet in Style.
