3.2 Media is multi sensual

The Meta.L.Hyttan is a new type of interface for site specific, interactive
media. In fact the interface is more of an interspace between visitor, the built
environment and the media content.
Interactive media is often misunderstood to only appear on audio visual devices
like DVD players or multimedia computers. Our understanding of media is extending
into other realms of the senses and real life human scale.
For example, the event showing the tapping of the blast furnace is using a
whole range of time based effects, linked into one content script. There is
the narrative audio, which was recorded with the help of three actors. It tells
the stories of the iron workers as a flashback through time. These pieces are
played back on 'discovery' by the visitor.
Depending on the flash light the visitor is carrying, he either gets the educational,
or the poetic media content for the tapping process.
But beyond the audio recording, there are also other effects. The iron flowing
from the blast furnace is represented by a flow of light that is synchronized
with the timeline of the narrative audio, as well as other light events.
Furthermore, heat radiators are built into the installation to simulate some
of the intense temperature that was present in the original situation.
A separate event zone is describing the effects of the pressured air supply
to the blast furnace. Graphic drawings are projected onto the corresponding
panel, to explain the technology.
But to induce a feeling for the power of the air pressure, a oversized fan comes
into action, when the visitor triggers the hotspot.
The media content script is a hyper media structure. The story and effects are presented in a non-linear fashion, but still linked to each other. The visitors movement and action around the blast furnace are determining the unfolding of the media events.
