A number of derelict industrial sites around Europe have been transformed into cultural heritage sites, science and recreation parks. The idea of local regeneration through the implementation of high profile cultural projects has proved to be a great stimulation for the local community, as well as making the region known beyond its borders.

The best known projects are in the Ruhr area in western Germany, together known as the 'Route Industrie Kultur' ( www.route-industriekultur.de ) . This large area, which represents the major towns of mining and steel manufacturing, features projects of historic value, popular science and entertainment.
The local municipalities see the reinvention of the old in the context of stimulating also new economies, by inspiring citizens and providing an interesting context to live in.
Projects include the empty 'Gasometer' in Oberhausen, an enormous gas tank, that is now the home to gallery with changing popular exhibitions and a viewing platform.

The Kokerei Zollverein is another example, where an amazing decommissioned industrial space was transformed into a cultural venue, while keeping the structure as a historic statement ( www.kokereizollverein.de )

A further example is the Landschaftspark Duisburg , which is a large park area with old blast furnaces that can visited. A light installation by the British Artist Jonathan Park is illuminating this industrial landmark during the nights.

The Magna Trust in Rotherham / England is another great example to transform a hopeless industrial ruin into an exciting attraction for visitors to enjoy. The site is about 2 hours north of London and markets itself as a science park. The old steel plant was transformed into a themed environment, highlighting the important elements in steel production: Water, earth, air and fire.
The exhibits offer both specific information about the plant itself, and more general examples of scientific value. A venue for changing exhibition is also included. ( www.magnatrust.org.uk )
