| Proposal for the Avesta Steelworks Visitors experience |
|

1.1 project introduction
Avesta is one of the birthplaces of the Swedish steel industry. The radical
changes in the business towards the end of the 20th century have left numerous
industrial ruins. Those places are now considered part of the cultural heritage,
and as such should be prepared for public enjoyment.
Avesta is home to a historic set of blast furnaces, that are unique in the world.
The Meta.L.Hyttan project is showing how the historic blast furnace hall can
be transformed into an interactive environment for visitors to learn, experience
and be surprised by history, science and art.
The historic nature of the site is an important factor to attract visitors,
but not the only one. Extra ideas need to plug into the strategy to make it
interesting for people of different backgrounds to visit Avesta, and to come
back.
Much more, the proposed installation should be able to be filled with content
of educational, cultural and experimental nature.
The Meta.L.Hyttan proposal for the space of the blast furnace hall goes beyond
conventional exhibition design, scenography or interactive information kiosks.
Interactive technology in this proposal is intuitively embedded in the environment
and the experience of this dark and mysterious place.
The Meta.L.Hyttan is proposing a concept strategy, that includes integrated examples for visitor scenarios, design, technology and media content
To make the effects, functionality and potential of the Meta.L.Hyttan understood, this document is complemented by a working, life-size prototype and an interactive digital model.
This is a scalable proposal, that can be extended beyond the blast furnace hall. It could be extended to the other parts of the old steel plant as well as being implemented in other site of interest throughout Avesta.
